Best settings for Cricut cut files

A good cut file is mostly about what you leave out: tiny specks, extra colours and background boxes. These settings give you clean, weedable SVGs for Design Space, Silhouette and laser software.

Start with the Cut file preset

Drop your image into the converter and pick Cut file. It sets one colour, raises speck removal and smooths corners a little. Those defaults suit most single-colour decals; the sections below explain when to change them.

How many colours

Every colour in the SVG becomes a separate layer in Design Space, and every layer is a separate cut. Set the colour count to the number of materials you will actually cut. The background doesn't count: it's detected separately and left out, so a one-colour decal on a white image is simply 1.

Two swatches that look almost the same? Remove one. Its pixels merge into the nearest remaining colour, so nothing is lost.

Remove specks

Tiny islands are the main cause of weeding headaches. Remove specks drops any blob smaller than the size you set. For clean digital artwork, 2–4 px is enough. Scans, photos and JPGs with compression noise need 6 px or more.

Starting points, not rules. Check the result in the compare view and adjust.

Corners and curves

Round corners decides whether sharp angles stay sharp. Blades and lasers cut gentle curves more cleanly than needle-thin points, so a value slightly above 1 helps with thick materials. Simplify curves reduces the number of nodes, which makes cutting faster and smoother; too much and small lettering starts to melt.

Background and stacking

Keep Transparent background on. Otherwise the background is traced as a layer and Design Space shows a big rectangle around your design.

Under Advanced, Stack layers without gaps makes lower colours run under the ones above. That's ideal for layered vinyl, where the layers sit on top of each other. If you cut every colour separately and place them side by side, switch stacking off so each shape is exactly its own area.

Import into Design Space

  1. Download the SVG from the Export panel.
  2. In Design Space, choose Upload, then Upload Image, and pick the SVG.
  3. Each colour appears as its own layer. Size the design, assign materials and send it to the mat.
Silhouette Studio (Designer Edition and up), LightBurn and xTool Creative Space import the same file.
